AGFUND International Prize for Pioneering Human Development Projects


The Arab Gulf Program for Development (AGFUND) based in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia is regional developmental funding organization that works with UN agencies, international organizations and local NGOs around the world for the sustainability of human development and poverty alleviation. It annually offers the AGFUND International Prize with the aim of inciting and encouraging innovation and creativity in the areas of human development.

The Prize identifies successful human developmental projects, provide them with substantial funding and disseminate their best practices and innovation to replicate in other areas. It has a particular focus on supporting projects that improve the living conditions of vulnerable groups, particularly women and children in developing countries and covers a range of issues such as poverty, social exclusion, socio-economic marginalization, education and health.

There are four categories under the Prize carrying a total cash award of US $500,000.
First Category is for organizations in supporting the developing countries’ national policies and programs for empowering youth through entrepreneurships and job opportunities (for projects implemented by UN, international or regional organizations). This category carries an award of US $ 200,000.

Second Category is for NGOs-led efforts to empowering youth through entrepreneurships and job opportunities (for projects implemented by national NGOs). Selected projects receive cash award of US $100,000.

Third Category is for the governmental bodies’ efforts in adoption of pioneering entrepreneurships for empowering youth and increasing their job opportunities (for projects by government ministries and public institutions). Cash award is US $100,000.

Fourth Category is for individual-led efforts to empowering youth through entrepreneurships and job opportunities. (For projects initiated, sponsored and/or implemented by individuals). Cash award is US $50,000.

Only nominations are accepted (self-nominations not accepted). The nominator should be an agency or a qualified expert who is thoroughly aware of the project, in terms of design, objectives, target beneficiaries, funding, implementation and successful impact. BBC World Challenge 2011


The BBC World Challenge 2011 seeks to provide recognition to projects or small businesses demonstrating enterprise and innovation at the grassroots level. BBC World News Limited and Newsweek are looking for nominations of social entrepreneurs who are making a difference without costing the earth.

Nominations of projects or ideas that demonstrate an entrepreneurial spirit working for the benefit of the community whilst adopting a responsible approach can be submitted. The entries have to show initiative especially the use of technology or an invention in an innovative manner. The projects/business should increase investment into the local community and take a responsible approach towards environment.

Nominations submitted should fall under one of the following categories:

    * Community Welfare and Enterprise
    * Health and Education
    * Sustainable Farming
    * Energy
    * Water
    * Environment

The World Challenge 2011 provides recognition to the winner of the competition with an award of US $20,000. The second and their Finalist also receive grant of US $10,000.

2012 Call for Applications for the Voluntary Trust Fund


The Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights has issued a call for applications for the United Nations Trust Fund that allocates project grants for programmes of humanitarian, legal and financial assistance to individuals whose human rights have been severely violated as a result of contemporary forms of slavery.

Contemporary forms of slavery include chattel slavery, serfdom, forced labour, debt bondage, the worst forms of child labour, forced and early marriage and the sale of wives, trafficking of persons and human organs, sexual slavery, sale of children and children in armed conflicts, etc.

Projects undertaken with the Fund’s grants include medical, psychological, education and housing assistance aid for women and girls who are victims of forced marriages, vocational training to victims of human trafficking for sexual and economic exploitation; support to rehabilitation centers for sexually and physically abused street children and projects to identify and release bonded labourers in the agriculture, carpet and construction industries. Other projects have provided victims with the means to generate sustainable sources of income, such as sewing machines, hairdressing equipment, or farming tools.

The Fund is administrated by the Secretary General, who is advised by a Board of Trustees. The Board is composed of five persons with relevant experience in the field of human rights, and contemporary forms of slavery in particular, serving in their personal capacity. The members of the Board are appointed by the Secretary-General with due regard to equitable geographical distribution, for three-year, once renewable terms.

Psychosocial Intern

The job of the psychosocial intern is full time for 35 hours per week. The psychosocial intern works under the day-to-day supervision of the head of the Psychosocial Team.

Requirements:

1.    English being the official language of the UNHCR Cairo as well as Africa and Middle East Refugee Assistance (AMERA) office, the psychosocial intern must be fluent in both oral and written English. Arabic language or one of the other languages spoken by refugees in Cairo is a distinct advantage.

2.    A background in mental health and social work and experience working in human rights and/or with refugees and asylum seekers in a social work capacity.

3.    A minimum of one year of experience providing psychological or social work services to refugees and asylum seekers.

4.    A Masters degree in psychology, social work, or a related field or an MD in psychiatry preferred. You may also be in the process of completing such a degree. Assistance with finding a qualified supervisor is available through Dr. Harrell-Bond (behbond[at]aucegypt.edu).

Shell Postgraduate Student Internships

The Nigeria Shell Postgraduate Student Internships is open primarily to talented Nigerian Postgraduate Students in Nigerian Universities but in exceptional cases to Nigerians in Overseas Universities.

The Research Internship programme provides the framework for the direct transfer of practical and current industry experience to Nigerian university research students.

With the understanding of their university-appointed supervisors, graduate students (MSc, Ph.D) spend a year in Shell to conduct research on the E&P challenges of the Company.

The research reports produced by the interns at the end of the internship are adapted for presentation to their universities for the award of higher degrees.

Shell offers approximately 20 research internship appointments yearly.

Emoluments given to the interns cumulate to N50 million annually. A number of interns have taken up appointment with Shell on completion of their studies.

Legal Advisor Intern

The job of the legal advisor intern is full time for 35 hours per week. The legal advisor works under the day-to-day supervision of the programmes director and in coordination with the legal officers.

Requirements:

1.    English being the official language of the UNHCR Cairo as well as Africa and Middle East Refugee Assistance (AMERA) office, the legal advisor must be fluent in both oral and written English. Arabic or one of the languages of refugee nationalities in Egypt is a decided asset.

2.    A background in law and/or experience working in human rights and/or with refugees and asylum seekers.

3.    A Bachelors degree in law or an LLM is preferred, but other Masters degrees or equivalent experience in a related field are also acceptable.

Kenya Human Rights Commission Internships

The KHRC Internship Programme is one of the leading programmes in the Kenyan democracy and governance sector in terms of offering hands-on training for human rights practitioners.

The Commission hosts between 15 and 18 interns annually and fully involves them in all aspects of its operations.

Application requirements:

·         Interns should apply to the Internship Committee at the Kenya Human Rights Commission.

·         A letter describing why you are interested in interning with the Kenya Human Rights Commission and what special skills or experience you have that would fit with our programmes.

·         A resume / curriculum vitae showing academic accomplishment, work experience, volunteer experience etc. Please include your email address.

·         The names, phone numbers and email addresses of two references (one academic and one work-related preferred).

·         Please include the title and organisation of the referees and a few words indicating the context of your work with them.

·         A brief unedited (professionally) writing sample that should be an academic essay roughly five pages long on any issue around human rights.

International applicants only:

·         Summer internships require a minimum commitment of twelve weeks.

·         Fall and Spring teams usually involve a commitment of 3 months.

IOM Internships

International Organization for Migration (IOM) is the leading intergovernmental organization in the field of migration.

IOM's internship program provides students with the opportunity to learn about its activities, to gain initial work experience, and/or to prepare for a degree dissertation.

The internships are voluntary assignments and can range from 8 weeks to 6 months in duration.

Interns tend to be students approaching the end of their programme or graduates between 19 and 32 years of age (average age is 26).

Interns are given assignments and responsibility commensurate with their experience and they are referred to a supervisor/tutor, who is responsible for mentoring and coaching.

They can be given short assignments either designed within on-going programmes or on an ad-hoc basis.

Interns are not considered to be staff members but Terms of Reference, tasks, duration of assignment and supervisors are clearly determined.

During their assignment, interns attend monthly briefings on the different services of the Organization and visit other Geneva-based International Organizations.

ICC Internships & Visiting Professionals Programme

International Criminal Court Internships (ICC) & Visiting Professionals Programme: As an international organisation endeavouring to optimise geographic and gender representation, the Court respects and values diversity and therefore encourages applications from candidates of all nationalities and cultures to its Internship and Visiting Professional Programme.

I. Internships Placements

The Court offers internships to highly motivated young professionals with good academic qualifications who are in the early stages of their careers.

The Internship is a practical educational experience whereby Interns principally assist the staff of the Court in discharging their duties.

Under supervision, Interns are assigned projects and tasks that are relevant to their educational background and interests and provide them with the opportunity to put into practice and further develop their theoretical knowledge.

The work will generally be comparable to the work of the upper general service category or junior professional level.

II. Visiting Professionals Placements

Visiting Professional placements are offered to candidates who have extensive academic and/or professional expertise in an area of work relevant to or related to the Court.

Visiting Professionals will usually be assigned to a range of tasks or specific projects in a capacity which will both draw upon and augment the specific knowledge or skills of the individual.

WTO Internship Programme

The WTO secretariat maintains a limited internship programme for post-graduate university students wishing to gain practical experience and deeper knowledge of the multilateral trading system.
Eligibility back:

·         Interns are recruited from among nationals of WTO Members and countries and customs territories engaged in accession negotiations.

·         Interns will have completed their undergraduate studies in a relevant discipline (e.g. economics, law, political science, international relations), and shall have completed at least one year of their postgraduate studies.

·         The minimum age for an intern shall be 21 years and the maximum age 30 years.

·         A roster of suitable candidates is maintained from which interns are selected.

In addition to the regular internship programme, the need may also arise to recruit interns at short notice for particular tasks.

These recruits will also be drawn from the roster. Names will not be maintained on the roster for longer than one year.

Contractual Terms and Conditions back:

·         Paid interns receive a daily allowance of CHF 60 (including week-ends and official holidays falling within the selected period). No other remuneration of any kind shall be paid.

·         Internships take place in Geneva, Switzerland only. Travel expenses to and from Geneva cannot be paid by the WTO, and such travel is not covered by the Organization's insurance. Interns are also responsible for their own insurance cover for illness and accidents while they are working at the WTO.

·         The WTO may also employ unpaid interns funded from external sources.

·         Internships are generally of a duration of up to 24 weeks, the length of the internship depending on the project the interns is requested to work on, and on the needs of each Division.

·         An internship can be terminated by the WTO Secretariat or by the intern with one week's notice.
