Japanese Government Scholarships for Tanzanian Students

Monbukagakusho (The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, Government of Japan) offers 3 types of scholarships to study at Japanese schools commencing in the 2013 Japanese academic year (starting in April and/or September/October).

•  Research Students

1. 2 Years (including 6 months of Japanese language training), extendable with permission from MEXT
2. Applicant must have been born on or after 2 April 1978
3.  Applicant must have graduated from undergraduate studies

• Undergraduate Students

1. 5 Years (including 1 year of Japanese language training) or 4 Years (without Japanese language training), 7 Years for medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine or 6 Years for pharmacy (including 1 year of Japanese language training)
2. Applicant must have been born between 2 April 1991 and 1 April 1996
3. Applicant must have graduated from A Level Secondary School by March 2013

• Specialized Training College Students

1. 3 Years (including 1 year of Japanese language training)
2. Applicant must have been born between 2 April 1991 and 1 April 1996
3. Applicant must have graduated from A Level Secondary School by March 2013

The Embassy of Japan in Tanzania is responsible for coordinating this government sponsored programme in Tanzania.

Call for Applications for 2012 Gretchen Walsh Book Donation Award

Application deadline for the 2012 cycle is May 31, 2012.

Call for Applications are invited for 2012 Gretchen Walsh Book Donation Award. The African Studies Association offers an annual grant program to provide book donation projects with shipping costs to send books to African libraries and schools. The Africana Librarians Council, Gretchen Walsh Book Donation Committee reads grant proposals and makes recommendations to ASA.

Successful awards are usually small grants in amounts from $200 to $1000. Those applying for partial funding of a project should clearly show how additional funding will be solicited.

The grants are intended to encourage innovative projects that incorporate essential elements, including:

• Book donation programs should reflect a partnership between institutions in Africa and the US with a liaison contact from each institution. While large scale donations of container-loads of books can be effective, the ASA is trying to fill a perceived gap by enhancing the number of small to medium-sized projects which emphasize on specific, articulated needs. Community based, grass root project involvement with benefit to broad, non-sectarian populations are encouraged.
• While books need not be new, they should be in good condition and relevant to the recipient’s needs. Books can be procured from libraries’ duplicates, personal libraries, books stores, students and publishers.
• Attention to details of logistics. The project plan should include a place to store books as they are being collected, a means of reviewing the books for physical quality and relevance to the recipient’s request, materials and staff for packing, a means of shipping to Africa, and all necessary paperwork for customs and shipping. The ASA cannot offer any services in arranging shipping or other.

Travel grants to young researchers to attend ESOF-2012

Travel grants will be offered to young researchers, who wish to attend ESOF 2012 at Dublin from 11th to 15th July, 2012. ESOF, Euroscience Open Forum is the biennial pan-European meeting incorporated by Euroscience dedicated to scientific research and innovation.

Different organizations, including the Swiss Embassy in Ireland, the French Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS), the Swedish Research Council (VR), the Danish Agency for Science, Technology and Innovation (DASTI) and the Research Foundation Flanders (FWO) offer travel grants to enable young researchers who wish to attend ESOF2012. The event will bring together over 5,000 scientists; senior EU and government officials; business leaders; and international scientific media to discuss the best of European science and to address all of the current important global scientific challenges, including Energy, Climate Change, Food and Health. Our themes span “Food Security” to “The Life and Death of the Universe”.

The active participation of young researchers, in the early stages of their careers, in ESOF is a major contributor to the success of the meetings. Their presence greatly enriches the Scientific Programme, and a parallel Careers Programme addresses many of their particular interests and concerns.

ESOF offers young researchers with a golden opportunity to interact with eminent scientists from different scientific fields. With up to 1,000 young researchers throughout Europe and beyond, ESOF2012 will give them the unique opportunity to expand their networks of international contacts and to establish significant links with potential collaborators.

A special programme is dedicated to young researchers – the Careers Programme. With the help of practical sessions, panel discussions, presentations, debates and networking events, the Career Programme will publicize the opportunities open to young and mid-career researchers in Europe and throughout the world.

Shirley Gilliver Memorial Fund Scholarship Grants

The Fund was established by the Family, friends and colleagues of Shirley Gilliver, a Senior Tutor in the School of Behavioural Sciences, who died in a road accident returning to Townsville from the Cairns campus on 22 April 1991. The Fund was established to promote the study of social welfare policy and problems of rural North Queensland.

The value of the scholarship grants shall be determined by the Selection Committee determine from time to time based on the available income of the Fund, as advised by the Director of Resources.

Eligibility Criteria-

Grants from the Shirley Gilliver Memorial Fund shall be open to competition among candidates who:

• are Australian citizens or permanent residents of Australia; and
• are a full-time student of the University enrolled in

1. a Bachelor of Community Welfare;
2. a Bachelor of Social Work;
3. a Bachelor of Community Welfare with Honours;
4. a Bachelor of Social Work with Honours;
5. a Masters of Social Work;
6. a Masters of Social Policy; or
7. a Doctorate undertaking research in rural communities.

Application Procedures-

Applicants will attach to the official form, where appropriate-

• a certified copy of their academic record from James Cook University and any other academic institution;
• no more than three references attesting to the applicant’s good character and/or suitability to receive the scholarship;
• their curriculum vitae; and
• any other supporting documentation that would assist the Selection Committee in developing an opinion as to the merit of the application.
