UNESCO Doha and Ford Motor Company announce small environmental grants for NGOs

UNESCO Doha and the Ford Motor Company have come together to provide small environmental grants to NGOs focused on conservation engineering, protection of the natural environment and environmental education to apply for small grants. A total of US$100,000 is available for initiatives from the gulf countries and the Levant region, including Jordan.An independent panel of jurors consisting of nine experts and academics from environmental agencies and institutions will choose the winning projects. The jury panel , which has been carefully selected in cooperation with UNESCO Doha, based on geographical coverage, experience  and gender equality, will look for initiatives that demonstrate a well-defined sense of purpose, a commitment to maximizing available resources, and a reputation for meeting objectives and delivering planned programmes and services.

Individuals, community and non-profit groups that have projects currently running in the areas of preservation of the natural environment, environmental education and conservation engineering can apply.

Open Society Foundations’ Grants Program: Request for Proposals “Fighting Torture in Health Care”

The Open Society Foundations (OSF) is requesting proposals from NGOs to apply for the new grants program called “Fighting Torture in Health Care.” OSF is the coordinator of the Campaign to Stop Torture in Health Care’s Standards and Litigation Working Group. It is seeking proposals from NGOs to implement proposals from organizations interested in using one or more of the mechanisms described in its recently published training manual to advance existing advocacy efforts to address torture in health care and ensure government accountability.

Background to this Context

“A wide range of severe abuses in health care have been documented, for example, the denial of cheap and effective pain relief medications for patients suffering excruciating pain under the auspices of a country’s drug addiction prevention strategy, or women and girls with disabilities and/or those living with HIV being sterilized without their consent or understanding at the insistence of their caregivers or because their doctors make the executive decision that they are not fit to raise children.

It is precisely because health settings are not thought of as places of abuse that they are monitored poorly, and the violations continue. In early 2011, a coalition of organizations working to combat severe human rights violations in health-care settings launched the Campaign to Stop Torture in Health Care to increase government accountability for abuse in health settings. The Campaign partners use legal, advocacy, and community mobilization strategies to at once increase awareness of torture in health care and to demand an end to the abuse.”

AusAID’s New Civil Society WASH Fund Call for Proposals

The Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID) has launched a new funding opportunity for NGOs called the “Civil Society, Water Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) Fund. Under this fund, AusAID has allocated $97 million competitive grants program to support civil society organisations (CSOs) to deliver WASH programs in Africa, Asia and the Pacific.

The WASH Fund seeks to enhance the health and quality of life of the poor and vulnerable by improving sustainable access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene.

Proposals are invited from both accredited and non-accredited Australian CSOs, as well as suitably experienced international CSOs (partnerships with national CSOs will be supported). Proposals will be assessed primarily on program quality and organisational capacity, with consideration also given to the need to achieve a balance of funding across regions.

Successful applicants will be required to implement activities over two phases. Firstly applicants will enter an inception phase of approximately four months during which time they will be required to further define and document their activity designs and implementation plans. A team of monitoring and evaluation experts will be responsible for producing document templates and will also provide technical assistance during the inception phase. The resulting products will form the scope of services for an agreement with AusAID for the four-year implementation phase of the activity.

CSO contributions to the evidence base will be enhanced by a Knowledge and Learning Component, which will have three parts:

• Innovation and pilot grants of up to AUD$100,000 per year for up to two years, available to CSO participating in the Fund, in collaboration with research organisations.
• Two Australian Development Research Awards Scheme research grants of up to AUD $400,000 per year for up to 3 years for research organisations with recognised expertise in WASH (the grants will be linked to the work of the Fund).
• Knowledge sharing and learning events such as regional workshops, webinars and an active website.

Applications invited by Ministry for Primary Industries for Masters Scholarships in field of Quantitative Fisheries Science, New Zealand.

In collaboration with NIWA, the Ministry for Primary Industries is offering masters scholarships. The scholarships were established in 2006 to allow graduate students to develop expertise in quantitative fisheries science in New Zealand. The research undertaken will contribute to quantitative fisheries research programmes with particular emphasis on the assessment of fish stock modelling.

Eligibility-

• Applicant must be New Zealand Citizen.
• Must be eligible to undertake an MSc at any New Zealand University.
• No age restriction.
